Revol Greens Doubling Its Romaine Production

Thanks to its expansion progress in a new, 20-acre greenhouse facility in Temple, Texas, Minnesota-based Revol Greens announced it would double its romaine production throughout the rest of 2022 and into 2023.

The grower now has operations in Minnesota, California, Georgia and Texas. The new, more advanced Texas facility is expected to produce upwards of 17 million pounds of greens annually upon its phase two completion.

According to the company, romaine lettuce represents a more than 25% share of the salad and lettuce category sales in grocery and food service. Romaine lettuce, too, is consistently plagued with supply issues due to recalls for contaminated products. There have been at least five major romaine lettuce recalls since 2017 due to food-borne illnesses.

“Revol Greens program can be an alternative to reduce the supply risk due to these factors by growing in a protected and controlled environment using advanced growing methods and sustainable greenhouse technology,” the company says in an announcement about the expansion. “The brand also uses proprietary Plant-Fed Organic Nutrient Sources, eliminating the need to use nitrates found in animal waste and greatly reducing chances of crop cross contamination.”

Revol has some big retail customers, including Sam’s Club, Costco, Walmart, Target, Albertsons, Safeway, Sprouts and more.
