ToBRFV Resistance Research Update

Jennifer Polanz

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre in Ontario, Canada, recently released an update on collaborative efforts to test and verify Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus-resistant breeding in tomatoes on the vine (TOV).

Article ImageThe team there has been involved in two efforts to combat the virus, according to the update, including a collaboration with researchers at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), a TOV breeding program in Canada, to screen Vineland’s collection of tomato lines for ToBRFV resistance. A second partnership is with two global seed companies to screen a wide collection of tomatoes in Europe for resistance.

“If current efforts are successful, it is anticipated that Vineland will be able to begin testing new, high-yielding varieties in commercial greenhouses in two years, using the newly identified resistance and breeding tools,” the announcement says.
